Now we hold their feet to the fire. We must hold the Dems accountable for thier campaign promises to “hold the Executive branch accountable” among others.
The Dems have proposed “A New Direction for America” plan not entirely unlike Newt’s and the Rethugs’ “Contract for America” over a decade ago that won them control of Congress in ‘94. Their 6 key goals, termed the “Six in ‘06,” are Real Security, Prosperity, Opportunity, Energy Independence, Affordable Health Care and Retirement Security and Dignity.
In addition to these six goals, they include in their pact with America a promise of “Honest and Open Government” which would among other things, reduce (eliminate?) the power and influence of lobbyists on government, Congressional corruption and cronyism.
David Corn writes today: “Pelosi has already promised that within the first hundred hours, her Democrats will approve bills that raise the minimum wage, increase funding for homeland security, lower interest rates on student loans and permit the government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to lower drug prices. . . She will also have to make certain that the Democrats proceed with the appropriate inquiries. The goal is to hold the Bush administration accountable without appearing vindictive. . . many Americans—especially those outside the party faithful whom the Democrats will want to keep on their side for 2008—will prefer to see Democrats producing legislative accomplishments rather than acrimonious investigations. But there are plenty of probes that can proceed.”
Specifically he mentions Iraq reconstruction fraud and the Bush administration’s suppression of scientific evidence of global warming and their failure to address this threat. Corn believes that the Dems should avoid impeachment.
Not me, however. I say impeach away… the more the merrier! Perhaps as a result of other investigations, the House will eventually find just cause for impeachment… “Ooops! We weren’t looking to impeach, but evidence uncovered in the course of investigations and inquiries into other non-impeachment-related subjects has pretty much forced our hand.” Could happen.
My point: don’t be a “Rubber-stamp Citizen” now that the Dems have taken over the House. Keep on your representatives to pursue justice and integrity. Hold your representatives accountable for holding the Bush administration accountable.
