Well...we were in a 'cold war' with Russia at the time. I realize that this was a very convenient state of affairs for folks who wanted to do all sorts things that didn't make sense for many Americans. Like start unjustified wars. Like create a permanent underclass. Like twist our government into a fascist parody of itself.
But....
I also remember that for decades both superpowers, and Russia was a superpower in terms of it's nuclear arsenal and still is, where engaged in a struggle for dominance. So I don't put too much stress on Carter's actions. He wasn't the first nor will be be the last President to be manipulated by the MI complex, the invisible conspiracy and the fascists here in Amerikkka.
The key thing is the cancer which has metastasized in the body politic under the name of 'security', 'defense' and 'patriotism'. Nothing new mind you but now so serious that.....
Surgery is now required.
To save the patient's life.

Regarding your post:

"In the absence of a comparable external challenge, American society may find it much more difficult to reach agreement regarding foreign policies that cannot be directly related to central beliefs and widely shared cultural-ethnic sympathies and that still require an enduring and sometimes costly imperial engagement." - Zbigniew Brzezinski, 1997

WTF - "foreign policies ... that still require an enduring and sometimes costly imperial engagement". It is amazing how some people can be so deliberately vague and so belligerent at the same time. I suppose I must now read “The Grand Chessboard" although the above excerpt makes it clear how hard it may be to stomach. But, then I may have a better idea of exactly what "foreign policies" require imperialism.

I need to find out more about the Trilateral Commission and the CFR anyway. I find it interesting that the Trilateral Commission and the American Turkish Council (mentioned in relation to Sibel Edmonds) are not included in the list of "Global Dominance Group Organizations" in "9/11 and American Empire", but then "Skull and Bones" is not listed either. I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make here, except that "secrecy" and "real influence" seem somehow oddly related, similar to the way that "propaganda" and "real motives" are related. How is it that these super-rich men can wield so much influence, so much power, and still remain
relatively anonymous? An intriguing question. Thanks for the post.

As you will note from the Zbig interview quoted at the end of the post, Carter actually took action one year BEFORE the "Soviet invasion" which, according to Brzezinski would likely induce Soviet military intervention.

“According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979. But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention….” (Interview with Zbigniew Brzezinski, Le Nouvel Observateur, 15-21 November 1998.)

We (Carter) acted, they (the USSR) responded. That's the takeaway.

Provocative post. I must point out that the fact that Jimmy authorized covert military support for what would become Al Qaeda less than a year before the evil Russians invaded Afghanistan is not proof of much other than he had good intell on what the Russians were planning.

Despite what's happened since I think the Bear trap the Russians found in Afghanistan did help drive them from world power status. Only helped mind you.

What's happened since and why is still a matter of contention. Certainly, we as a nation are not doing well or right under Bush and his cabal of insane clowns. This, no matter who imagines they are acting as puppet-masters for the NeoCons and their ilk is the reality America as a nation must face in the near term.

Ultimately, what will is matter if we remain a 'superpower' if 'Peak Oil' becomes a reality and, as many predict, 80% 0f ocean life dies off in the next 30 to 40 years.

The 'invisible conspiracy' are, like their sockpuppets the NeoCons, merely rearranging the deck chairs on the sinking ship....
