The Shrill One wrote a column in The Economist today. You can read the whole thing here. I found it interesting that he was using the same analogy I did when I posted: We are now at Day 26 of the Hostage Crisis. I posted that back on April 23rd. One fact in that post has now been ’superceded’ by The Unitary Executive. There are now plans for over 200,000 troops to be held hostage to Bush’s deranged ‘Git Them Afore They Get Us’ clusterfuck. As Krugman puts it:
If this were a normal political dispute, Democrats in Congress would clearly hold the upper hand: by a huge margin, Americans say they want a timetable for withdrawal, and by a large margin they also say they trust Congress, not Mr. Bush, to do a better job…
But this isn’t a normal political dispute. Mr. Bush isn’t really trying to win the argument on the merits. He’s just betting that the people outside the barricade care more than he does about the fate of those innocent bystanders.
By ‘innocent bystanders’ Krugman means the American troops serving now prisoners in Iraq. He goes on to use a famous Lincoln quote, what a amazing man he was, to highlight the immorality, the criminality of Bush and those he represents,
The whole situation brings to mind what Abraham Lincoln said … in 1860, about secessionists who blamed the critics of slavery for the looming civil war: “A highwayman holds a pistol to my ear, and mutters through his teeth, ‘Stand and deliver, or I shall kill you, and then you will be a murderer!’ ”
I do not believe the American people will be fooled by Bush’s attempts to place the blame for Iraq on the Democrats. Yes, yes I know that’s the Republican plan and I also know that the MSM is ready to play their part. Their are two reasons why I still have faith in the citizenry’s ability to see past this pathetic scam which I will get to below. First however we need to look at the failure of those we expected to stand up to ‘The Decider’. Yep, as it seems to be encoded in their genes, at least the ones in office at this time, the Democrats….
They seem to be making, it’s still rather murky, the political calculation that letting the war ‘run’ for another fiscal year will put them in a stronger political position. Democratic ‘leadership’ must have forgotten the 2002 midterm elections and how well the tactic of letting Bush have his way worked out. Right Tom? They have also badly miscalculated the reaction of we in the blogosphere. The coals of dissatisfaction with Senator Reid and Madame Speaker Pelosi are starting to grow white hot with indignation.
I myself can be said to be extremely pissed off and have been for quite a while. But…
Rather than indulge in backbiting as this prominent blogger did or fulminate on the front page as this one did I propose we….
Those two things, the voters making those who failed to stand up to Bush as they want them to do pay, for a politician, the ultimate price and the blogosphere’s targeting and pressuring the DINOs and ‘Blue Dogs’ until they crack will make Bush’s apparent victory now a pyrrhic one.
The ReichWing scum in this country have spent over 40 years, ever since the idiot Goldwater opened his ignorant yap and spewed his fascist bullshit all over the Republicans, building their hegemony. We will not undo these vile works in a day, a week, a month, a year, no not even in a decade. Further, if you are not prepared to dig in a work for change, change our nation is crying out for, then please….
