Habeas Corpus Restoration Act of 2007

I have contacted Senators Feinstein and Boxer by phone and email, encouraging them to strongly support this legislation, which was introduced by Senators Leahy (D-VT) and Spector (R-PA) earlier this year. Leahy has a plea for our participation his website.

Admittedly, this is a small step and in the current political climate, it’s about as much as one can do as an individual online. There are many, many campaign promoted by groups like MoveOn.org, People for an American Way and others which are great for drumming up excitement and spreading the work. The best way, however, to impress your legislators of the importance of an issue is to actually speak with them, when they return to their home districts. Second is a telephone call to their Congressional offices. Third is a personal email, directly to them…not a generic form letter. Following is a brief message I wrote each of my California Senators.

I am writing to encourage you to strongly support S. 185, the new legislation co-sponsored by Senators Leahy and Spector (“The Habeas Corpus Restoration Act of 2007”). The marginalization of my right to Habeas Corpus is a remarkable and unacceptable breach of my personal sovereignty, which no American, nay, no human being should accept. Your action is required in the fight to restore this fundamental right.I trust you agree that the federal government’s current perspective on my right to protection under this landmark writ is a genuine crisis…an absolute shame. In the event you have a different perspective on this issue and/or the aforementioned legislation, I would appreciate your immediate response.

Thank you for your consideration.

Thanks to mcjoan, for her post at DKos, highlighting the issue of Habeas Corpus once again.
