An Abdication in Detroit

Carl Pope, Huffington Post, July 6, 2006

San Francisco — Last week, the Ford Motor Company joined the parade of stunningly hypocritical auto manufacturers by announcing that it was abandoning its goal of selling 250,000 hybrid vehicles per year by the end of the decade. Instead, Ford joined other automakers in promising to make 2 million flexible fuel vehicles. “In a joint letter sent Wednesday to members of Congress, General Motors, Ford and DaimlerChrysler AG announced a new promise to double annual production of vehicles that run on alternative fuels, to 2 million per year.” Congress promptly responded to the announcement by refusing, once again, to increase fuel economy standards.

But the auto industry knows that making two million “flexible-fuelled vehicles” won’t dent our dependence on oil. First, the “alternative fuel” they are touting is a mix of gasoline and ethanol called E85, because it is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Regular cars can, and often do, burn ethanol-gasoline mixes that are up to 10 percent ethanol already — so the real difference with E85 sounds like it might be an impressive 75 percent.

But the reality is far different. First, it takes a fair amount of fossil fuels to make ethanol — diesel fuel for tractors to grow the corn and transport it, natural gas to make fertilizer for it, and gas or (worse) coal to distill it. But this doesn’t matter so much, because 99 percent of these flexible fuel vehicles never see a drop of E85 but run on gas instead. That’s according to a March 2002 study by the Bush Administration.

Since there are fewer than 700 gas stations selling E85, out of 176,000 stations in the U.S., these flexible fuel vehicles will mainly burn the same gasoline that the rest of the fleet does. For example, within 25 miles of my home there are NO gas stations selling E85 to the public! So, the actual savings from this big new auto industry commitment will certainly be trivial at best. Unfortunately, it gets worse.

The auto industry gets bogus fuel economy “credits” for selling flexible fuel vehicles, as if these vehicles were actually all burning ethanol-based fuel. As a result, U.S. gas consumption is actually going to go UP as a result of the auto industry’s latest maneuver. The Bush Administration’s study estimated that the combination of the fuel economy loophole and failure of 99 percent of the flexible fuel vehicles to use E85 would result in an increase in U.S. oil dependence of 17 billion gallons by 2008. On the other hand, we could easily reduce consumption by 50 percent by using more-efficient vehicle technology, the solution that Congress — and the auto industry — just rejected. ed. note: Did you notice the recent spike in food prices? These are connected folks.

Again, William Clay Ford and the rest of the auto know these numbers. This is not something someone just dug out. They don’t care.

If we really want to kick our oil addiction, we’re going to have to do it from the grass-roots up. That’s why the Sierra Club has just launched “Smart Energy Summer” — a campaign to connect Americans with the real solutions to our energy and global warming problems — ones that our leaders know about, but just won’t embrace.

Still wrestling with Vista Ultimate 64 bit…and if you don’t know what that means….

October 3, 2008

…count yourself lucky.

We are all lucky folks like Heidi Li exist and more are speaking out about the current politics being practiced by all those ‘running for President’.

Here’s the lede in para which is a Thurgood Marshall quote. Black dude ya know….

Certain people have a way of saying things that shake us at the core. Even when the words do not seem harsh or offensive, the impact is shattering. What we could be experiencing is the intent behind the words. When we intend to do good, we do. When we intend to do harm, it happens. What each of us must come to realize is that our intent always comes through. We cannot sugarcoat the feelings in our heart of hearts. The emotion is the energy that motivates. We cannot ignore what we really want to create. We should be honest and do it the way we feel it. What we owe to ourselves and everyone around is to examine the reasons of our true intent.”
–attributed to Thurgood Marshall

Clik on thru to read the rest. She pretty much catches what I find so wrong and dishonest about ‘The Precious’. Sadly, it becomes more evident every day how lacking in real leadership our nation is. I suppose it’s a good thing Obama is so lacking in that skillset.

Otherwise we’d really be in trouble.

Once Again Barbara Lee shows the way….She say, ‘No…’

September 29, 2008

to the ‘bailout’ proposed by the corrupt, rotten ‘leader$hip’ of the now twice damned Pelosi and ‘Sellout’ Reid as they, along with ‘The Magic Man’ stoop to do Leader Bush’s bidding.

Here is what she said today on the floor of what we now laughingly call, ‘The People’s House’.

Washington D.C.– Today (Sept. 29, 2008) Congresswoman Barbara Lee delivered the following statement on the House floor in opposition to the financial bailout bill considered today. The Congresswoman voted against the bill, which failed by a vote of 205-228.

“Thank you Madame Speaker and thank you Mr. Frank, the Chairman of the Financial Services Committee, for his efforts to improve the administration’s $700 billion blank check proposal.

“As a former member of the House Financial Services Committee for eight years, I can tell you that the situation we find ourselves in is the direct result of the deregulation happy, turn a blind- eye approach of this administration and its allies in Congress.

“Now we see the horrific price of these reckless deregulation policies.  More than 600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January.  People need jobs to obtain credit and to pay their rent.   They need jobs to pay their mortgages or to put money in their 401k or retirement account.  Millions of people are living paycheck to paycheck, if they have a paycheck.

“Home foreclosures are skyrocketing, and home values are plunging, banks are failing and we are still spending more than $10 billion every month on a war in Iraq that should never have been waged.

“So there is no question that we are confronting an economic and financial crisis.

“But I’m convinced that this bailout plan is not the solution to this mess.

“First, it does little to address the underlying problem – the foreclosure crisis. We need a moratorium on foreclosures and bankruptcy reform to help people stay in their homes.

“Second, this bill should be paid for by the high-flying industry that created this problem.   $700 billion should not be given to Wall Street and the Bush Administration unless those who cause this mess pay for it. We should also prohibit the tax deductibility -and my bill the Income Equity Act  (HR 3876) would do this across the board –  of executive compensation in any company where the highest paid corporate officer is paid more than 25 the times the pay of a bailed-out company’s lowest-paid worker.

“And third, we need an economic stimulus package to deal with the crushing reality of the recession that is hitting people hard and growing every day.

“I cannot vote to reward those predatory and subprime lenders who are creating such havoc in the lives of millions of Americans.

“There is a better way.”

Yep and that way requires hard work, years of it which probably puts it beyond the reach of the Libertarian punks who think we have friends in the ‘Democrat’ Party. Who think Obama is about ‘change’.

We do have some friends in the party but Pelosi…multimillionaire Pelosi ain’t one of them.

I’m Back….

September 26, 2008

…still some thinking to do but nope I have not changed my opinion about.

Obama.

The ‘Democrat’ Party

Drinking Liberally…

So called ‘fellow progressives’

The real battle is about to begin and I intend to work so that it is not for the crumbs from our masters tables. The nation is on the brink of the abyss with few of talent or principle to lead us. Indeed the times call for a new paradigm.

One sans such ‘leaders’ as George W. Bush, Barrack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein, Harry Reid. And no we don’t need suc as Marko Moulitas, Chris Bowers, Jeralyn, Josh Marshall and the rest of the self-appointed, now discredited, ‘leaders’ of  Left Blogistan.

Look for changes here soon.

Quote of the Week….

August 17, 2008

Cowardice asks the question, ‘Is it safe?’
Expediency asks the question, ‘Is it politic?’
Vanity asks the question, ‘Is it popular?’
But conscience asks the question, ‘Is it right?

And there comes a point when one must take a position that is
neither safe,
nor polite,
nor popular,
but one must take it because one’s conscience tells one that
it is right. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

A sentiment I share with that great American. It’s one all Americans would do well to live by.

Another One Under the Bus!

August 16, 2008

Under the bus they go,
Their transgression they may not know!
But….
It’s under the bus they go.

The wheels go round an round,
His hectoring voice never ceases to pound!
Fail him and you know…
It’s under the bus you’ll go!

Worst of all is to be one who really can do,
To Barry that’s an insult, an insult to be too blue!
So….
It’s under the bus you will go.

Red is the color he likes the best!
Pay attention to his behest….
Never show what you know,
Or, it’s under the bus you will Go!

I could go on like this all night. Barry is such rich mine of material for satire it’s just ridiculous. But….

You guessed it.

Not as ridiculous as this.

Still think Barkey is a Democrat?

Is this a free country or what?
